When we go looking for a laptop at our local store, its very typical for us to spot one that stands from the rest and catches our immediate attention. A laptop that seems neither too over the top nor too ordinary. Neither a rocket scientists work station nor a geek’s wet dream. Its something that doesn’t make your head spin in confusion. Its simple, sturdy and at a perfect balance in all sense.

ASUS N56VZ-DS71 is one such ASUS entertainment laptop that has received commendation and praise through vast majority of its users. Lets talk about its design first.

Design/Display:

The exterior is nothing less than a work of art. Its solid lined aluminium exterior is certain to spellbind you. Other than looks, aluminium exterior has many advantages of its own. Firstly, its tougher than a plastic surface and resistant to scratch. Secondly, it doesn’t display the hideous finger prints of the users. It also helps your laptop stay somewhat cooler.

Given the specs for this laptop you’ll expect it to be considerably thick, quite on the contrary this laptop is fairly compact with 3.5 cm thickness and weighing about 2.7kg (with battery).

The keyboard surface on N56VZ-DS71 ASUS Entertainment Laptops offers nothing more than just the essential to preserve simplicity. A power button, keyboard, trackpad, and LED indicators thats all. However, it does have a very elegant and subtle mesh style speakers above the keyboard.

Performance

At the heart of ASUS N56VZ-DS71 is a powerful and latest intel “ivy-bridge” 3rd generation quad-core i7-3610 (2.3 GHz) processor. This is a quad core processor with 8 threads and when you couple it with 8 GB of DDR3 RAM you get a powerhouse for multitasking and heavy photo/video/3D graphics editing and rendering. Another great advantage of the 3rd generation “ivy-bridge” processor over the 2nd generation intel processor is the increase of battery life. Therefore, you can expect a high end performance from this laptop even when on battery mode.

N56VZ-DS71 ASUS entertainment Laptop is not primarily designed for gaming; however, with Nvidia GT 650 2Gb this laptop can perform as one. Nvidia GT 650M can support most latest games perfectly on mid to mid-high range. This laptop actually has two graphics chips, Nvidia GT 650M 2Gb and an integrated chip that comes with the ivy-bridge processor. Nvidia GT 650M only kicks in when the graphics processing requires a lot power such as when gaming. During ideal to casual state the processor graphics chips operates. This helps save battery life. The only drawback in terms of graphics for this laptop is the 2Gb GDDR3 instead of GDDR5 for the graphics card.

N56VZ-DS71 ASUS  entertainment laptop also comes with a vast array of options for connectivity and also a Blu-ray-enabled DVD±RW/CD-RW. A Blu-ray disc player makes complete sense for this laptop since it has a Full HD screen. The sound system on this laptops features co-development by Bang & Olufsen ICEpower® and Waves MaxxAudio.

The only relatively major drawback for this laptop in terms of hardware is its 750GB HDD “5400″ RPM. The lack of a SSD drive or a faster HDD seems out of order from the rest of the high specs of this laptop. A slower harddisk means accessing your files and opening your application might take an extra few seconds. But lets not be so picky. On the bright side, the HDD provides ample storage for this laptop.

Given the price bargain, giving this laptop anything under 5/5 stars would be doing it injustice. Therefore, I would personally choose to disregard HDD limitations.

Mobility

N56VZ-DS71 ASUS entertainment laptop offers a thin profile and the fact that it has a 15.6″ display means that it can fit in any backpack. Therefore, its ideal for students as well as employees alike. Its also about 2.7 kg, therefore carrying this laptop around would be quite hassle free. This laptop is obviously not as light as Ultrabooks, and you shouldn’t expect it to be as light either because this is an entertainment laptop. On the downside though, there are other slimmer more compact laptops out there in the market offered by both ASUS and other brands such as HP Envy Sleekbooks. But take note that, this laptop is lighter and slimmer than many standard laptops of similar specs.

Battery life is usually a concern on entertainment laptops with such high specs.  This laptop offers a very decent battery life of 2.5 hrs on high performance, 3-3.5 hrs on entertainment, and about 4hrs on battery saving.

Value for Money

N56VZ-DS71 ASUS entertainment laptop is an all rounder machine. It has the hardware capable of performing a wide variety of work ranging from video editing to casual gaming. Make no mistake, this laptop is not your everyday entertainment laptop. This is so much more.

Other laptops in the market sharing the same specs are easily a couple of hundred dollars more expensive.For $1,200 you cannot wish for a better laptop especially when compared with others. A Dell XPS 15 with a 15inch screen, core i5, Nvidia GT 630 and 6GB RAM will cost you slightly more.  Now you do the Math, a weaker laptop in comparison is slightly more expensive. This is just one example but no matter where you look you’ll find N56VZ-DS71 ASUS entertainment laptop to be the best bang for the buck by far.
